What a difference a day and a new pair of shoes makes.
After having a 5 hour identity crisis yesterday with not being able to get a bunch of stuff done – including a stout long run – I was able to dial it in and get caught up on a ton of work and sketch out a decent training week. Priority one – a better midweek setup for feeling like I don’t have to get caught up on volume. Just try to keep it more even.
Got things off to a nice start with an easy 5+ miler / 45’ish minutes with some light climbing today.
I feel 1000% better. I think I just needed to regroup and revisit what I’m actually doing – which is running a 100 miler for fun before my wife and I welcome a child this summer. I do want to get after things a bit with the Pikes Peak summer series starting in June, but I’m not prepping anything specific for that yet. I’m training for Zion to get out and run in the mountains for enjoyment and as a mental planning period for how and when I’ll train / what I’ll want to race when we have kids. This is supposed to be an exercise in doing a bunch of unstructured volume in cool places and teasing out what seems interesting and fun to me in running and training moving forward.
Mental clarification helps.
So does a new pair of Kinvaras. Man, I love that Saucony shoe. A great mix of a light, responsive shoe with a decent cushion and a bit of a supportive feel. Still don’t like the new ones as much as the earlier models (the heel feels clunkier/more rigid, almost like a forced rocker), but they are still so sweet to run in.
